Origins: Harlem, where drag balls had run since the late 1800s and turned into vogue battles between the 1960s and the 1980s. Black and Latine LGBTQIA+ communities built the dance there from high fashion poses and ancient Egyptian art. It is named after the magazine, not the other way round.
Sensitivity: Ballroom is a living culture with its own houses, categories and rules, not a free-floating aesthetic. It is respectful to know whose moves and vocabulary you are using, and to say so.
